Sue Richards
Artist & Social Entrepreneur

In the summer of 1981, the U. of Guelph accepted Sue Richards' mature student application for admission to their Social Sciences program. With this single event, Sue's life took an abrupt and permanent shift in a completely new direction. She quit her full time job at a cake decorator in small town Ontario, rented her three bedroom brick bungalow to strangers and said goodbye to her long time high school friends. With her 1979 Pinto packed to the roof, she headed to a single dorm room in South Residence at U. of Guelph.

"I was terrified. I wasn't sure if I was smart enough. I wasn't sure about much except that I knew I needed to make a change in my life. I stuff myself in that little room and started reading the dictionary every night," she says.

The next twenty years were busy. Sue frequently traveled exploring five continents extensively. She did a three-year stint as Artistic Director of Guelphs' famous Hillside Festival and worked with countless Guelph artists as their manager, agent, grant writer and advisor. In 2000, Sue was honored with a Woman of Distinction Award for Arts and Culture from the YWCA - YMCA. She has juried the Juno Awards, co-written over 50 one-act children's plays and started a community arts program called ART JAM.

ART JAM received a national arts award from the Canadian Council for the Arts and became wildly popular in its short two-year life. However a nasty twist of real estate fate sealed the end of the program and all was lost.

But all had not ended.

Sue began creatively shifting her life course again.

One seed of thought lead to another and the idea for Breast of Canada Calendar 2002 was born. Creative partnerships were forged and the project sprang to life with creative momentum and flair.

"This is definitely the most important undertaking of my life so far. And it appears that I'm ahead of the curve on this one. I'm stimulating a breast health movement in hundreds of circles", she says. "And I'm loving every minute of it"
