Message from the Canadian Breast Cancer Network

June 01, 2006

The Canadian Breast Cancer Network (CBCN) is proud to be in partnership with the Breast of Canada calendar for the 5th year.

The CBCN is a survivor-directed, national network of organizations and individuals. Its mission is to provide a national link between all groups and individuals concerned about breast cancer and to represent the concerns of all Canadians affected by breast cancer and those at risk. We have 225 partner and member groups in the breast cancer, cancer and other sectors across Canada.

In 2006, CBCN continued to develop projects for young women living with breast cancer; rural, remote and Northern women living with breast cancer; and women living with advanced (recurrent or metastatic) breast cancer. These projects will address some of the information and support needs outlined by the consultation participants:

• National Young Women’s Conference, to be held in Toronto in 2007.
•  “CBCN Detective” - a book to help those living with advanced breast cancer.
• Sexuality and Fertility Workshop Series.
• Grrr…Femininity – A book and DVD set providing information about the impact of recurrent or metastatic breast cancer on relationships and sexuality, including how to deal with these issues.
• Empowerment DVD Series: “The Faces of Breast Cancer”, including “Not Too Young…..stories of” and “Aboriginal Breast Cancer Journey”.
• National Hotline Connection for Young Women with Breast Cancer.

We would like to extend our special thanks to Sue Richards for taking on the calendar once again, and for her hard work, time, persistence and utter dedication.

Jackie Manthorne,
Executive Director

Dear Sue,

Thank you for your donation of net proceeds of $587.06 from the sale of the 2004 Breast of Canada Calendar to the Canadian Breast Cancer Network, and congratulations on successfully growing the Calendar!

As you know, the Network is suffering from budget cuts from Health Canada, and although we are fighting them, the process is political and thus long. We have appreciated the support we have received from you personally and the Calendar during the past three years. We are also certain that there has been much awareness raised about the Network and the breast health information has been imparted to many, many women.

We would certainly like to continue our partnership for future editions of Breast of Canada, and indeed we look forward to continuing our relationship for many years!

Best,
Jackie Manthorne

At the conclusion of our first year partnership with Sue Richards and Art Jam and on the eve or a second year, CBCN is very pleased with the excellent profile and the increase in awareness generated by the Breast of Canada Calendar. The outstanding media coverage has served the CBCN well and has helped to introduce our organization to hundreds of thousand Canadians. As the national voice of breast cancer survivors and serving as the pulse of Canada's breast cancer community it is very important for us to be a recognized and respected voice in the fight to eradicate breast cancer.

As an educational tool, the calendar serves its owners well and provides a daily, year round reminder about breast health issues thereby furthering the educational objectives of the CBCN.

We are certain that as this independent initiative grows in popularity, the fundraising element of the Breast of Canada project will increase substantially thereby offering three important components to the CBCN's existence; increased organization profile, another vehicle for breast health education and additional funds for our continued service.
